OnePercentMore Run Club. Finding Our Stride in Scotland, by Freddie Owsley

Freddie Owsley is a dual-sport athlete with a background in track and field as a sprinter, alongside a career in professional rugby. After stepping away from professional sport, Freddie, like many athletes in transition, found himself missing a clear sense of purpose and the camaraderie that comes with being part of a team.

Although competition had ended, his love for training, self-improvement, and high-performance environments remained. Recognising how isolating this transition can be, Freddie was motivated to create something meaningful. An environment that would support athletes who, like him, were navigating life beyond elite sport.

“Hi my names Freddie Owsley, I am an ex professional rugby player and GB Athlete. This is my story about how I set up one of the biggest run clubs in Scotland as a way to get out the house and see my old mates.

From that desire, OnePercentMore was born. Continue reading to learn more about Freddie’s journey and how OnePercentMore is helping athletes find direction, community, and purpose beyond their sporting careers.

one percent more. A small push, a small win, a small step forward. It all adds up.

My sister and I founded onepercentmore back in 2022 when I came out of full-time professional sport with the ambition of sharing our secrets to master improvement. One of the first steps forward in this journey was starting a run-club by the sea in Edinburgh. The simple idea was to bring people together who want to improve, feel better, and enjoy running without any of the pressure. Although we started in the midst of the cold Edinburgh winter with 2-3 people turning up each week in the rain and the cold, we ended up growing it into one of the biggest run clubs in Scotland with around 700 members in our whatsapp group and growing.

We keep things pretty relaxed. Some days we do easy group runs, other days we mix in intervals or a slightly longer route if people are feeling up for it. Sometimes we head out to explore new areas, because Scotland is packed with incredible places to run: coastal paths, riverside trails, quiet parks, proper hill climbs… you name it, we end up running it. No session is ever the same, but one rule stays constant: nobody gets left behind..

We’ve also been surprised by how much running spills into everything else. Confidence grows, friendships form, new habits stick, and suddenly those little one-percent improvements start showing up everywhere. That’s the magic of doing this together.

So if you’re in Scotland and thinking about getting back into running – or starting from scratch – come join us. Bring your old trainers, bring your nerves, bring your enthusiasm, we welcome everyone. We’ll meet you where you’re at, run beside you, and help you find that extra one percent.

Because we’ve all got a bit more in us than we think.
